Janel H. Johnson, DO, MPH, is a Cherokee Nation citizen and a clinical assistant professor of medical education at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation (OSU-COM-CN), where she not only serves as the co-course director of several courses but also spearheaded the development of a LGBTQIA+ cultural competency video series to support diverse medical students.
Following graduation from OSU-COM-CN in 2014, Dr. Johnson completed her family medicine residency at Northeastern Health System – Tahlequah and went on to earn her executive master of public health with a focus on preventative sciences from Emory Rollins School of Public Health in 2018. During her MPH program, she contributed to the Cherokee Nation Hepatitis C Elimination Project as well as the CDC Tribal Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology team. She became a Harvard Center for Health Equity, Education and Advocacy scholar in 2021 and was a coach for the 2022 class.
A dedicated volunteer in the osteopathic community, as well as the Cherokee Nation, Dr. Johnson serves as President of the Tulsa Area Osteopathic Medical Society. In addition to being an ACOFP member since 2014, she is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association.
Student Doctor Caleb Watson is a proud member of the Cherokee Nation, is a first-generation and current second-year medical student at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine at Cherokee Nation (OSU-COM/CN) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma—the first tribally affiliated medical school in the United States. Caleb is from the rural town of Tupelo, Oklahoma which has a significant Native American (NA) population. Caleb was selected to participate in the coveted Tribal Medical Track that aims to prepare students to become primary care physicians who will treat NA patients at Tribal hospitals and clinics. Since his short tenure at OSU-COM/CN, Caleb has served in different leadership roles at OSU-COM/CN including President of the Native American Students of Osteopathic Medicine and Ambassador for the Office of American Indians in Medicine and Science.
Caleb is passionate about recruiting NA youth to pursue a career in medicine. He has organized multiple recruitment and community service events within tribal populations of Oklahoma including the Native American Pre-Admission (NAPA) Workshop. Caleb has also helped teach traditional NA customs to his fellow classmates through numerous cultural activities on campus.
