Dr. Emily Copel was born and raised in Long Island, NY and attended Indiana University Bloomington, obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Applied Health Science in Health Education with a focus on secondary teaching. Just prior to graduating in May of 2002, she participated in an international teaching program in Glasgow, Scotland at Hillhead High. In July 2001 she joined the Greenlawn Fire Department as an Emergency Medical Technician and Class A fire fighter. During her 13 years in the volunteer fire department Dr. Copel obtained her EMT- CC certification, became an American Heart Association CPR instructor and a Suffolk county EMS instructor. After graduating she worked as a Health teacher before deciding to return to school to become a physician. During the three and a half years of her post baccalaureate studies she worked for New York Presbyterian EMS in New York City, primarily in Washington Heights. Dr. Copel went on to attend New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and graduated in 2011. After graduation Dr. Copel completed a Traditional Osteopathic Internship at Southampton Hospital in Southampton, NY followed by a Family Medicine Residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, NY and finally a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Care medicine at Jamaica Hospital in Jamaica, NY. She is currently an attending physician on the Palliative Care team at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital in NY. In addition, she is a Hospitalist at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, NY, Flushing Hospital Emergency Department and GoHealth Urgent Care. Dr. Copel is continuing her studies in Biomedical Ethics and is a candidate for a Masters in Biomedical Ethics at Einstein School of Medicine in NY. Outside of work Dr. Copel enjoys spending time with her 3 daughters and her husband.
